Originally, the Museum was established as a regional museum. The basis of the collection are archaeological artifacts from excavations in the area of early medieval Kołobrzeg conducted by prof. Lech Leciejewicz and several monuments from the pre-war museum, excavated from the rubble by the distinguished tourism activist Jan Frankowski.
The museum is located in a 15th-century tenement house at ul., rebuilt especially for this purpose. second lieutenant Emilii Gierczak 5. Initially, it was planned to give the facility a historical-urban character, then a historical-maritime character. Finally, in 1966, a historical-military profile was chosen.
